APRIL 2004 199 NEWS ISSUE

The Women’s Committee hosted our annual Women’s Day Fair on Sunday, March 7 2004 at the CAW Hall. We had numerous speakers who did an outstanding presentation on their various issues. Amongst them were Mary Kovacs from Breast Cancer Awareness who also is a breast cancer survivor, Marion Holmes from Amnesty International, Suzanne Mason from CARSA and Auggie McGloin from the Niagara Regional Sexual Assault Centre. We were also honored to have Deputy Mayor Susan Erskine opening our Fair. In our closing we had the pleasure of having the renowned Raging Grannies performing for us.

A beautiful poem in tribute to the victims of the Montreal Massacre was written and read by Susan Erskine-Fournier. The committee has been busy promoting our Fair with radio interviews and flyers throughout the community.

We are now busy working on our “Tea & Teddies” for the spring. Also we have a directive from Julie White, Director of the Women’s Department CAW National, about the upcoming Woman to Woman Campaign for the Federal Election. We will have more information displayed throughout our plants.

The Women’s Committee is pleased to announce that ladies t-shirts, sweatshirts, pants and hooded jackets are now available. These items will have our CAW Local 199 logos attached with various colours and sizes. A catalogue will also be on hand for viewing. Anyone interested in ordering any of the articles please call the hall at (905) 682-2611. All inquiries will be forwarded to the Women’s Committee.

FEBRUARY 2004 199 NEWS ISSUE

The Women’s Committee hosted the commemorative breakfast honouring the young women who were killed in the Montreal Massacre on December 6, 1989. This event was a great success and we would like to thank all those who attended. Our guest speakers were: Mayor Tim Rigby, Jackie Labonte from the Native Friendship Centre also Sergeant Jim Baskerville, head of the Domestic Violence Unit of Niagara Regional Police. This event is growing every year. More men attended to support this cause and for that we thank you! We look forward to the day when events such as this no longer are held.

Violence against women must stop! We as a union with education in our communities will ensure violence in all forms will end!

The Committee is actively working together to put forth the “best” International Women’s Day Fair ever. This will be held at the CAW Union Hall, 124 Bunting Rd. from 10 am – 3 pm on Sunday, March 7, 2004. We have an array of guest speakers and activities set. Daycare for those who may need it at a nominal charge. This will be an exciting and fun event. Please join us. More information will follow through leaflets into our plants.

We are looking forward to all our brothers and sisters participation in this acknowledgement of women and the issues that affect us all.
