MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING:

To adopt the minutes of the previous meeting.

BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES:
  • CAW train will be up & running shortly
  • asking technicians from dealerships to help get it going
  • train is very important and beneficial for small units & organizing
  • not the best time to be bargaining new agreements
  • Dana ratified by 92% with no improvements or raises
  • every sector in Local 199 facing layoffs
Manufacturing Maters (by Gary Bradnam & Wayne Gates):
  • manufacturing matters forums around the region on May 11th
  • 9:00 a.m. in Welland at CAW hall on Steele St.
  • 12:00 noon in Niagara Falls at Legion on Spring St.
  • 3:30 p.m. at CAW Union Hall in St. Catharines
  • there will be a fully rally on May 29th in Ottawa
  • will be meeting with all city councils
  • asking all members to attend forum at CAW hall
  • all units to receive leaflets to table top their plants
  • this is not just about the auto industry, this is about the constant loss of manufacturing jobs
  • there is no political support out there from any political party
  • local politicians have been invited, PC MP Dykstra will not be given a chance to speak, seeing how he went back on his work to our local about supporting the anti-scab legislation
SHOP COMMITTEE REPORTS:

BRUNNER MFG.
  • 49 members left working in the plant
  • supervisor still trying to intimidate members
  • 100,000 parts in stock
COUTTS LIBRARY
  • very busy
  • one grievance – going to arbitration
  • very trying relationship with human resources manager
  • hard to keep up with demand for Stamford University and this could cause problems with other universities
CULLEN MOTORS
  • service area has picked up
  • one member on layoff in body shop
  • sales picking up
  • no grievances in system
DAVID CHEV OLDS.
  • no report
ED LEARN
  • body shop closing in June
  • 3 technicians coming from Day Lincoln
  • service dept. busy
  • body shop very busy
  • meeting is set for May 7th with owner
EDSCHA
  • business has picked up
  • currently have 158 active members
  • 5 grievances in the system
  • step 3 meeting is May 16th
FIRST ONTARIO CREDIT UNION
  • no report
FORBES FORD
  • business has started to pick up
  • plenty of rumour about our future & dealership is being put up for sale
  • no grievances in the system
GENAIRE
  • extremely busy
  • new contracts from the States will be starting soon
  • will be hiring soon, mostly family
  • God bless the USA
GENERAL MOTORS
  • no report
IAFRATE MACHINE
  • as of May 7th, will have 26 members in the plant
  • 5 grievances in the system
JOHN BEAR PONTIAC
  • negotiations are coming to an end on May 12
  • owners don’t want to pay
  • business has been up & down
  • 1 mechanic on permanent layoff
NEPTUNUS
  • have been very busy past few weeks
  • April 28th, 13 layoff notices given out of the blue
  • Problems starting to arise with work being done off site
  • 3 grievances in system
NIAGARA MOTORS
  • pretty busy
  • no grievance in system
SECURITAS
  • 2 grievances in system
  • 1 called back
  • 1 terminated
  • things have been going fairly smoothly with company
SENECA MFG.
  • doing ok
  • received a dye from Port Colborne
  • no layoffs
  • in August, will start shipping to Australia
  • management relations have greatly improved
TORA INC
  • layoff notices given to 100 members
  • no grievances in system
  • in the middle of contract negotiations

OLD BUSINESS
  • 199 News still not picked up by some units
  • next issue should be out by mid-May
  • general membership meetings are poorly attended by leadership of small units
  • important for unit chairs to let local members know what is going on in their units
NEW BUSINESS
  • CAW picnic to be held at Sherkston Shores in August
  • 199 website up & running – very interactive and user friendly
  • second to none within the CAW
