Workplace Legislation for Students
This is an awareness course for students entering the workforce. The course is two hours in length, is designed for groups of 15-25, and covers four main topics:
1. Health and Safety
2. Employment Standards Act
3. Human Rights Code
4. Labour Relations Act.
The program includes four presentations, several short video clips and an opportunity for class interaction where the student can ask questions and discuss the issues that are of relevance and interest to them. Following the presentations, the students participate in a game of Jeopardy to test their knowledge on the four subjects.
The target audience are students 15-17 years old who are, or have just entered the workforce.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to identify hazards in the workplace, relate to their own chosen occupation and explain when they can refuse unsafe work. By participating in the ESA quiz, students will demonstrate their basic knowledge of the minimum employment standards in Ontario. Students will be able to discuss and define harassment and discrimination in the workplace.
The new program has been successfully delivered to students at Niagara College, Holy Cross, EL Crosley and St. Francis.
